OBJECTIVE OF THE DEPARTMENT:
"ESTABLISHING
A FOUNDATION FOR RECENT ADVANCES IN BIOSCIENCES AND INCULCATING
BIOTECHNOLOGY AS A CHALLENGE FOR THE FUTURE"
Bioscientists and Biotechnologists are the mainstay of the future
entreprising world. This is the source of inspiration for the
new, juvenile, confident and forward looking faculty of the Post-Graduate
Department of Biosciences & Biotechnology of the Fakir Mohan
University at Balasore in the East Coast of Orissa State, India.
The Department not only imparts teaching, but also provides entrepreneurial
training and education to the University graduates, which is unique
by itself in the State of Orissa. The interdisciplinary and integrated
approach of the Department culminates in the Post-Graduate Degrees
in Biosciences as well as in Biotechnology.
How does the Department build-up the
students for the future challenge?
It is through a simplistic scientific approach, which is rare
in a University culture. The Department endeavours to achieve
this goal through its young, enterprising and challenging teachers
having global experience. The Department has chalked out and targeted
a growth plan inculcating the virtues like ambition, ability,
adaptability, competence, humility, intelligence, persistence,
flexibility and endurance among the students.
However, technology should be contemporary, futuristic and should
cater to the needs and demands of the people. This can be global,
national or regional. Technological development is only possible
through local entrepreneurs in a global perspective. Scientific
and Technological advancements are meant for improving the quality
of life. With expanding population, disease diversity, depleting
soil condition, decreasing arable land, dwindling forest, increased
industrialisation there is a colossal environmental pressure for
sustenance of life on earth. There is need for clean air, potable
as well irrigation water, and structured soil for a healthy living
system. However, to attain this goal one need to have indepth
knowledge of the living systems starting from morphology to gene
regulation through the metabolic network at cellular level. This
is the first and foremost need of mankind. The Department imparts
teaching, research and bio-entrepreneurial training starting with
the area of basic Biosciences (Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular
Biology) to Genetically modified organism, Recombinant DNA technology,
Gene therapy & Molecular Medicine, Biosensors, Biopolymers,
collection and conservation of local gene pools for different
biotypes through the Gene bank.
A highly competitive and interdisciplinary research and teaching
program is envisaged in near future in the areas of Bio-informatics,
Environmental Biotechnology, Medical, Pharmaceutics, and Bio-entrepreneurship.
The products of the Department have ample scope for employment
in academia, scientific organisations and industries. Besides,
these value added products have very high demand in the Western
market. Looking at the human resources, the P.G. Department of
Biosciences & Biotechnology envisages to reach the zenith
of achievement with each and every batch of its graduates.
OUR GOAL: IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE.
