Dept of Bioscience & Biotechnology About the Department Vision Syllabus Students Activities Faculty Profile ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The Fakir Mohan University was established on 11.02.2000 under the Orissa University Act, 1989 and accredited by the Association of Indian Universities. The Department of Biosciences and Biotechnology started in the year 2004. Govt. of Orissa sanctioned regular core faculty positions in the Department to start the regular integrated Post-Graduate (M.Sc.), M.Phil & Ph.D. teaching program in Biosciences and Biotechnology. The Department imparts integrated teaching in Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Animal and Plant Genetic Engineering, Environmental Biotechnology, Developmental Biology, Signal Transduction, Biosensors, Immunology, Proteomics and Genomics, and Bio-Instrumentation. It has two laboratories, culture facility, a seminar library and a computer laboratory. The major equipments available to the students are : UV Visible spectrophotometer, Cold centrifuge, Micro-centrifuge, Gel electrophoresis apparatus (Horizontal/ Vertical), Trans-blotting /Western blotting apparatus, Gel-documentation system, Laminar flow chamber, Microscopes (both Trinocular and Fluorescence microscope with photomicrographic attachment), PCR, ELISA Reader, HPLS etc. The Department is equipped with OHPs and a LCD projector for classroom and seminars. The personal advisory system is implemented for a close interaction between the students and teachers for overcoming the difficulties and deficiencies of the students. The research activities initiated in the Department comprises of a wide range of basic studies that addresses important biomedical and biotechnological problems, and focuses on the fundamental biophysical and biochemical phenomena in animals, plants and microbial cells. These research qualify as applied research. The scientific success of our Department rests on its interdisciplinary research environment by close interaction of specialists from different fields. To realize its ambitious research and teaching program, this Department needs substantial financial support. The Faculty of Biosciences and Biotechnology has an intake capacity of 32 students for the M.Sc. program. Students are admitted from Biological, Natural, Medical, Agricultural and Veterinary sciences. The first 15 students enrolled will complete their M.Sc. in the year 2006 and already 20 students have been enrolled in the current academic year. Summer training and dissertation work is compulsory curriculum of the Department. Students are encouraged to work towards the Ph.D. degree in all fields represented in the Department. The Department conducted the first UGC sponsored Refresher course in Environmental Sciences for College/University teachers from 21 Sept. to 11 Oct. 2004, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Sciences. Looking at the rapid advancement in the field of Biosciences and Biotechnology, the following laboratories will be established in the field of Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Systematics & Evolution, Proteomics, DNA Finger Printing, Tissue Culture, Gene Pool Conservation (flora & fauna), and Animal room. The Department plans to expand itself to a School of Integrated Living Systems by up-grading the curriculum of Biotechnology, Biosciences (Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics) and Bioinformatics to respective Departments.
