ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The department started with 16 P.G. students and six faculty members (one Professor, two Readers and three Lecturers) and one peon and the department has started offering M.Phil and Ph.D programes this academic year 2006-07. Faculties drawn from different interdisciplinary fields with academic/ industrial/ research experiences, exposures, management and team leadership ability.
With short span of time this new department is trying its best to fulfill the needs of the state and industries in the Nation Building Processes and providing skills and techniques to students.

A.) Infrastructure and Learning Resources of the Department

Being the New University, the Department is allotted with and functioning at a small limited space. Within few months, it has developed and carved its existence with one faculty room with attached toilet, two class rooms-cum-seminar hall, one furnished. Laboratory for optimal use of each and everything allotted to the Department by University Authority.
In addition to the Central Library Facility of the University, the Department has also developed its own seminar library.
Within short period of its existence, through Library, the Department has procured 173 number of text and reference books, 18 numbers of old journals/monographs and report etc. related to Environmental Sciences.
The Department has limited other learning resources (two computer with one printer, one overhead projector), one LCD and slide projector is at Register's office available for use on special occasion.
One laboratory having the instrumental facilities like UV-visible Spectrophotometre, BOD-incubator, Muffle Furnance, and Temperature regulated Oven, digital balance, Distillation plant, Electrophoresis apparatus, and other instruments as per the Academic programmes. The Department is trying to procure and seek UGC-help in this matter.

B) Industry-University interactive programmes of the Departments

Presently, the students are allotted and sent to different industries (at and Balasore) under the guidance of a Department teacher (having work experience in industry) to work on: i) Environmental plan & state of Environmental affair, ii) Effective utilization of Environmental Management system and pollution control programme practicing by the Industry; and to submit a report under TERM PAPER in third semester.
Department is also venturing new areas of collaboration with different industries/ mines and academic Institutions, invites experts from Industries to Departmental seminar in order to interact and share experiences on environmental Management that industry with faculty members and students and to deliver talks on Industrial Pollution control.
To strengthen the interactive / partnership programme with industry, the Department has taken one sponsored employee from "Ispat Alloys Ltd", Balasore to carry out M. Sc. Environmental Sciences Programme, on trial basis. The faculties are also working on acceptability of our curriculum to Industry people by taking feed back from them to strengthen such academic institution-Industry partnership programme in future.
